Expanding your run gives your flock more space, reduces pecking order battles, and lets them stretch their wings without roaming too far.
Here is a simple plan sized for 6–10 chickens.
Supplies Needed
-
2×4 lumber (treated or sealed) – approx. 10–12 pieces
-
Hardware cloth (½”) – 50 ft roll
-
Exterior screws
-
Zip ties
-
Hinges + latch for a small gate
-
Roofing panels or corrugated plastic for a covered area
-
Ground stakes or paver stones

Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Choose Placement
Attach the new run to an existing coop wall or current run. Aim for full sun in winter, partial shade in summer if possible.
2. Build the Frame
Construct a rectangular base from 2×4 lumber:
-
-
Standard size: 8 ft x 12 ft
-
Secure corners with exterior screws
-
Add vertical 2×4s every 4 ft
-
Add a matching top frame
-
3. Wrap in Hardware Cloth
For predator protection, wrap:
-
-
All sides
-
The bottom 12 inches (apron method—lay it outward flat and cover with dirt or pavers)
-
The top if predators like hawks, owls, or raccoons are common
-
4. Create an Access Gate
Use leftover 2×4s to make a simple gate frame.
Cover with hardware cloth.
Install with hinges and a latch.
5. Add a Covered Section
Your chickens need a dry area even during sleet or snow.
-
-
Add corrugated roofing above one third of the run
-
Angle the roofing so snow can slide off
-
Ensure roof overhang avoids drips near the door
-
6. Connect to the Existing Coop
Cut a small doorway between coop and new run, or attach directly to the main run using a secure hardware-clothed passageway.
7. Add Enrichment
Winter can make chickens bored! Add:
-
-
Hanging cabbage
-
Logs or tree stumps
-
A sandbox with dry soil/wood ash mixture
-
Perches at varying heights
-
